On utility trenches, I’ll run a quick DCP and a Clegg drop to bracket stiffness, then do a loaded truck proof-roll — acceptance is “no pumping or rutting.” If we need numbers for the record, we calibrate to a sand cone on day one so DCP blows per 25 mm line up with target density, but moisture control and lift thickness still make or break it. I build a short IC control strip and watch the roller’s ICMV; once it plateaus, I lock that pass count/settings for the run, and on wet clays I spot-check with a hand shear vane for su >= 75–100 kPa. Small caveat: cold crusts or high fines can spoof IC, so lightly scarify the top 50 mm and re-run if the numbers look too good, @francis_king42.
, when I’m truly ‘no gauge’, I grab a 3 in. drive cylinder and a Speedy moisture kit; in about 10 minutes I’ve got moisture and unit weight to check against the lab Proctor for a 95% call. Works in silty/clayey fill, but in coarse backfill I switch to a balloon densometer and rely on tight visual and deflection limits.
