@OP The most useful PDH I’ve taken was my state DOT’s Earthwork Inspector recert; the trick that paid off is to rotate the 3430 90° and rerun at 4 in — if the readings differ by about 1.5 pcf or more, you’re seeing thin-lift/segregation, so tweak the roller pattern or moisture and re-test. Small caveat: on coarse fill, do a quick oversize check (ASTM D4718) or switch to sand cone.
When the 3430 starts lying at 6 a.m., the best PDH trick I picked up in my DOT’s AASHTO T 310 recert was a quick scrape-and-plate: scrape off the crust, drop a thin steel plate, and re-shoot at 6 in to flag bridging.
